We know very well that our country, the Philippines, is rich in natural wonders. We are no short of beautiful mountains, beaches, and forests. But oftentimes we would always go to famous venues such as Boracay, Cebu, and La Union.  But there are many hidden treasures waiting for us to be discovered. Zamboanga is just one of these places. The Zamboanga Peninsula is teeming with different cultures, beautiful sights, and places to see.

Zamboanga, The City of Flowers

The City of Zamboanga is located in the south of the Mindanao region within the Zamboanga peninsula. It is the fifth most populous city in the country and the third largest city by land area. The city is well-known for its Hispanic influences and for being the “Sardines Capital of the Philippines” since the majority of the country’s canning companies are located in the city. Apart from this, it is recognized for its deep history, culture, and scenic beauty. It has several other monikers among which are City of Flowers and Asia’s Latin City.

The City of Zamboanga derives its moniker “The City of Flowers” from the word “Jambangan” taken from the native language of its ancient founders, the Subanons. Jambangan means “a place of flowers”. Legend has it that Zamboanga’s roadside used to be filled with colorful and beautiful tropical flowers. A blooming paradise, it was even referred to.

Zamboanga is also known as Asia’s Latin City, this is mainly based on the fact that the language that the locals speak, Chavacano or Zamboangueño language, is a creole language that makes use of Spanish and native vocabulary but follows Philippine grammar. Traces of Hispanic influence is also evident in their architecture. It also shares the same patroness with Spain, Our Lady of the Pilar.

One of the top tourist destinations in Zamboanga Del Sur is Sta. Cruz Island. It is home to the famous Pink Sand Beach. Truly a rare sight for everyone to see however, the sand is not actually pink. The pink hue is only a result of white sand being mixed with crushed red corals. But the beach and the tropical forest near it are still worth visiting as it still gives that picturesque view.
