While there are those who doubt the success of House of the Dragon and prefer the original, the series still left an undeniable contribution to the world of Game of Thrones. They renewed the series for a second season and it will start production this summer with its release pegged in the first or second quarter of 2024.

Despite House of the Dragon ending in October 2022, the hype continues to live on in its fans who continue to create everything from art to fanfiction and to series theories. The anticipation for House of the Dragon’s second season continues to rise as the year progresses.

That said, here are five (5) things that House of the Dragon fans are looking forward to in the second season.

Five Things that House of the Dragon Fans Anticipate in Season 2

House of the Dragon was originally based on the novel written by George R. R. Martin titled Fire and Blood. They released it in 2018 as a spin-off to the original Game of Thrones book series. It details the history of House Targaryen and largely served as the basis for House of the Dragon as it is now.

There were many events in the book that did not make it to the final series, but that doesn’t mean that fans have lost hope in seeing some scenes come to life on the screen.

#1 Blood and Cheese

Blood and Cheese is a pivotal event in the books that many fans hope to see come alive. It details the revenge of the Blacks against the Greens after the death of Lucerys Velaryon at the hands of Prince Aemond and his dragon, Vhagar. Daemon Targaryen sent assassins known as Blood and Cheese to “collect a debt”; murdering Jaehaerys, the eldest son of King Aegon II and Queen Helaena.

Many fans anticipate the airing of this episode as it formally begins the Dance of Dragons - the Targaryen Civil War.

#2 Prince Regent Aemond Targaryen

Many fell in love with Prince Aemond Targaryen thanks to the exemplary performance of his actor, Ewan Mitchell. This is also why many look forward to how the character will be on screen when Aemond takes on the role of Prince Regent. This is after King Aegon II is left out of commission after their battle with Princess Rhaenys of the Blacks at the Battle of Rook’s Rest.

As Aemond is a fan favorite, many look forward to seeing him take on a larger role in the future seasons of House of the Dragon.

#3 More Dragons

A tale of House Targaryen wouldn’t be complete without the presence of dragons. At the end of the series’ first season, we’ve seen about eight dragons on screen, namely:

Towards the end of the first season, Daemon Targaryen mentions a list of dragons that we have yet to see on screen. The list includes the wild dragons (Cannibal, Grey Ghost, and Sheepstealer) who live on Dragonstone, and Moondancer (the mount of Baela Targaryen). there are other dragons that have yet to be shown or mentioned in the series such as Silverwing who still lives in the Dragonmont. While those who have read the books know the fate of the said dragons, we cannot wait for them to be brought on screen so we can marvel at their design.

#4 The Return of House Stark

At the end of Game of Thrones, House Stark has become a well-loved House by fans and enthusiasts. In House of the Dragon, we’ll get to the see the northern clan once again under the banner of Rhaenyra Targaryen. House Stark is slated to fight in the Targaryen civil war with the Black Queen.

This also means that a new cast of Stark characters, including Rickon Stark and Cregan Stark - some of the OG lords of the House before Ned Stark. Fans also expect that the new season will dive deeper into the Stark lore and why their house stood tall amidst the great divide in the realm.

#5 House of the Dragon’s All-Star Cast

They poised House of the Dragon season 2 to keep most of its cast from the original season - something that most of the fandom is elated to know. This means that the main players from both factions, including Emma D’Arcy, Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Tom Glynn-Carney, Ewan Mitchell, Eve Best, Steve Toussaint, and the rest of the cast, will return for the next season.

We can also expect fresh faces to be included in the all-star cast as we have yet to see other critical characters such as Cregan Stark, Dalton Greyjoy, and even Alys Rivers, take the screen.

In all, there is much to look forward to when House of the Dragon finally releases its second season. Since the first season left much to be desired in terms of unexplored plots and storylines, we can only hope that House of the Dragon season 2 can exceed expectations that many fans have.
